Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy is changing the landscape of hair loss treatment. A dermatologist explains who benefits most and what the process involves.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has gained significant traction as a treatment for hair loss — and for good reason. When used correctly for the right patients, it can produce meaningful improvements in hair density and scalp health.

How PRP Works

Blood platelets contain growth factors — including PDGF, VEGF, TGF-β, and IGF — that play key roles in tissue repair and regeneration. PRP therapy concentrates these platelets from your own blood and reintroduces them directly into the scalp at the level of the hair follicle.

This stimulates dormant follicles, prolongs the anagen (growth) phase, and improves blood supply to the scalp.

Who Benefits Most?

PRP is most effective for: - Early to moderate androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) - Alopecia areata (in conjunction with other treatments) - Diffuse hair thinning - Post-inflammatory hair loss

It is less effective for advanced baldness where follicles have been replaced by scar tissue.

The Treatment Process

A standard PRP course involves 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every 6 months. Each session takes approximately 60–90 minutes.

Results are typically visible from 3–6 months after the first session, with maximum benefit around 12 months.

Is It Safe?

Because PRP uses your own blood, immunological reactions are not a concern. Side effects are typically mild and temporary: scalp tenderness, temporary redness, and very occasionally minor bruising at injection sites.

The Dermatologist's Role

The key is accurate diagnosis before any hair loss treatment. PRP for the wrong type of hair loss will produce poor results. At Skinhub, every hair loss patient receives a thorough trichological assessment before any treatment is recommended.
